The next morning, bright sunlight streamed in.
Cassandra came downstairs holding Zion’s hand and immediately spotted a so-called picture-perfect breakfast scene at the table.
"Cassie, I woke up early just to make your favorite—scrambled eggs and syrupy pancakes. I'm really sorry about last night," Lillian said as soon as Cassandra sat down, quickly sliding a plate in front of her.
"I mean..." Cassandra took a big gulp of orange juice and held up her glass to block the plate, "eggs with syrupy pancakes? That combo’s kinda weird."
Lillian’s smile froze. She clenched her teeth silently before pulling her hand back, forcing a grin. “Oh right, I talked to your father last night. We agreed to have a selection of upscale violins delivered from the music store for you to try. Maybe you could join a music class too?”
“No need. I’ve got way more important things going on,” Cassandra replied flatly while chewing on her sandwich.
