Chapter 32
Everett’s POV
I’d read the reports. The nurse was right—it was just anemia and low blood sugar. But was avoiding mutts really necessary?
“Eleanor…”
Before I could finish the thought, Scarlett’s weak voice cut through my haze.
“I… I need to use the bathroom…”
“I’m here!” Eleanor rushed to her bedside. “Scarlett, how are you feeling?”
Scarlett’s lashes fluttered, her face pale and slightly damp. Her mind seemed foggy, her vision still unfocused.
She furrowed her brow, her voice scratchy and hoarse from the fever. “I… I need to go…”
“It’s normal to feel like that after fluids,” the nurse said, stepping forward. “She’s awake but still groggy. I’ll help her to the bathroom.”
“Alright.”
Eleanor moved to support her, but I stepped forward first and scooped Scarlett up in my arms before she could react.
“Hey! What are you doing?”
“You hold the IV bag,” I said calmly, my dark eyes cutting to Eleanor’s.
She froze at my tone, then nodded quickly and followed, clutching the IV pole like a soldier
