Chapter 1008 Is He Really Good to You?
Deirdre’s mind buzzed as she heard her mother’s accusations.
‘Brendan went to buy clothes together with Miss Emily? And they acted intimately?’
Mrs. Engel rushed over, not even bothering to wipe her hands. “No, no! There was no intimacy. I think those photos look quite normal. Their arms didn’t even touch. Maybe it was just a trick of angles? Mr. Brighthall has always been very cautious and wouldn’t do something like this.”
Ophelia wanted to explode in anger. “Then what about him saying he was going to the office and ending up with another woman? What does he take Deirdre for?”
Mrs. Engel couldn’t defend Brendan any further.
Ophelia sat down on the couch and grabbed Deirdre’s hand.
“Deirdre, tell me, do you really want to be with Brendan? Is he really good to you?”
“Mom, he’s very good to me.” Although Deirdre didn’t know what had happened, her first reaction was calming her mother down. It would be meaningless for her mother to know too much because of her poor health.
“You’re lying to me…” Ophelia shook her head. “If he’s good to you, why did he go out with another woman? The woman is the heiress of Collins Pharmaceuticals. If Brendan were to marry her, it’d indeed be well-matched, and his career would take off even further.
“Moreover, the director of Collins Pharmaceuticals has just passed away, leaving behind Emily Collins, his only daughter. If Brendan becomes the son-in-law, he can naturally take over Collins Pharmaceuticals. Don’t be fooled again!”
Deirdre was stunned. She hadn’t thought about Emily’s background.
It was true that if Brendan married her, his career would undoubtedly soar.
But Deirdre thought about how Brendan didn’t even care about his own reputation and their collaboration.
“Mom, I’m not being foolish. It’s just a misunderstanding. You know how the media can exaggerate things. Brendan and that Miss Emily just had some business to discuss,” explained Deirdre.
Ophelia choked up.
“If you really trust him, then there's nothing else I can say. But Deirdre, I don’t want you to pin your hopes on an irresponsible man. You’re my daughter; I only care about your happiness.” Ophelia sighed.
Deirdre felt bitter and relieved. “Yes, mom. Don’t worry, I won’t let you down.”

“Mr. Brighthall, how about these earrings? Do you think they’re pretty?”
Emily was picking out earrings in the store while Brendan stood beside her, unconsciously checking his watch.
When Brendan heard Emily, he just nodded briefly and said, “Mm.”
“What does ‘mm’ mean? Is it pretty or not?” asked Emily with a smile. She looked more like she was pulling Brendan’s leg.
“They’re pretty,” replied Brendan.
“Okay, I’ll buy them all. Can you please help me wrap them up?” asked Emily.
The shop assistant’s eyes lit up as if she had seen a wealthy patron. She praised Emily before she added, “You two are such a perfect match. I haven’t seen a couple as compatible as you two.”
Emily’s eyes sparkled with amusement, but then she heard Brendan's cold rebuttal. “We’re just friends.”
“Ahh?” The shop assistant was stunned and didn’t know how to react.
“Could you please tell me how much they cost?” asked Emily.
The shop assistant hurriedly went to the cash register.
Meanwhile, Emily leaned over to Brendan and said, “Mr. Brighthall is so indifferent. Can’t you protect my dignity in front of outsiders? You almost embarrassed me.”
“I think not letting outsiders misunderstand is the biggest courtesy,” replied Brendan.
Emily smiled and agreed, “You’re right.”
Just then, Brendan’s phone rang. He picked it up, and his pupils contracted after listening to the content. When he turned his face back to Emily, it was covered with a surge of coldness.
