Chapter 1013 Stay Away From Her if You Respect Her
Brendan pulled back his hand that was holding Deirdre’s hand rapidly soon afterward.
Ophelia’s warning from last night came into his mind.
“Brendan, if you respect and love Deirdre, stop behaving inappropriately toward her. You haven’t married her, so don’t let her live indecently. This is also very uncomfortable for me, her mother, who is watching.
“I won’t stop you anymore when you’re really planning on marrying her to make her your wife. Otherwise, I’m considering what Deirdre means to you in your heart.”
Brendan felt extremely troubled but could understand Ophelia’s intention.
It was because the situation with Emily yesterday had gone too far.
It was already utmost magnanimous of Ophelia not to lose her temper after learning about the false report.
He did not wish to continue to disappoint Ophelia in any other way.
Hence, he could only bear with it despite his strong urge to wrap his arms around Deirdre.
He had to learn to respect Deirdre.
Deirdre was caught off guard when the grasp over her hand was loosened and retracted her now empty fingers.
“What’s going on?”
“Nothing. You should go back to your room to rest. I’ll send Mrs. Engel to get you when the ophthalmologist is here.”
Deirdre recovered from her surprise. She nodded and walked out of the room in a distracted state.
The moment she walked into the corridor, she was still thinking about Brendan’s unusual behavior during breakfast and the action of pulling back his hand suddenly earlier.
She hoped that she was not overthinking…
Mrs. Engel entered the study in the afternoon.
“Sir, there’s a woman by the last name of Collins at the door. She claims that she has an appointment to see you. Should we let her in?”
“Emily?” Brendan shut the document and massaged his temples. “Let her in.”
He put on his coat. His action quickened at the thought of how Deirdre’s eyes could be cured when the ophthalmologist was here.
Emily was welcomed into the living room coincidentally when he walked downstairs. Emily was admiring the decoration of the mansion at her own pleasure.
“This is ‘The Hinterland’ by Glenn Brown, made in 2006. You’ve managed to get it from an auction and hang it on your wall as decoration. Your devotion to art is truly impressive.”
Brendan shifted his gaze to the area behind Emily and furrowed his eyebrows without his notice. “Didn’t you mention that the ophthalmologist is here? Where is he?”
He spoke in a rather unpleasant tone. After all, no one enjoyed being under another person’s control.
Emily was completely unbothered. She said smilingly, “You’re just as straightforward as you were when we first became acquainted, Mr. Brighthall. You won’t even make small talk.”
Brendan’s expression was cold, as usual. “There’s nothing much for us to talk about. Where is the doctor?”
“The doctor… is standing before you officially, Mr. Brighthall,” Emily said meaningfully.
Brendan’s gaze turned dim instantly, and his expression was also filled with coldness. “You should know your limits even if you’re joking, Miss Collins. Even though I’m not acquainted with the ophthalmologist, the people in the profession are aware that he is a man.”
Emily did not panic when she was exposed. On the contrary, she lifted her chin. “What difference does it make if the ophthalmologist is a man or a woman? Isn’t it fine as long as the ophthalmologist is just as capable?”
Brendan narrowed his eyes. “Don’t try to argue, Emily.”
Emily could tell from his dangerous gaze that she would be in deep trouble if she continued teasing him. Hence, she pulled out a folder from her bag and handed it to Brendan.
Brendan opened the folder and doubtfully read the content. Then, his gaze changed.
Emily said, “The ophthalmologist and I work in the same research center. I took part in the same surgery that he took part in, and this is the referral letter from the research center. Do you still not believe that I have the capability, Mr. Brighthall?”
Brendan shut the folder. “Your capability is one thing, while I only want that particular ophthalmologist is another thing, Miss Collins.”
