Chapter 1012 She Wondered Whether She Was Overthinking It
Deirdre shut her eyes and thought about it for a while before she fell asleep. She put on a jacket and headed downstairs after she got up the next morning and discovered that Brendan was already at the dining table.
Deirdre sat beside her and lowered her head to eat her oats. Her hair was hanging loosely around her shoulders, so strands of her hair almost dipped into the oats. Brendan wanted to help her push away her hair subconsciously, yet he pulled back his extended hand.
“Deirdre, don’t get your hair in the oats.”
“Hair?” Deirdre was confused until she tidied up the loose hair around her forehead. She came to realize the situation and was stunned for a moment.
Brendan would have already pushed away her hair if this were the past.
She wondered whether she was overthinking it.
Deirdre lowered her eyes and continued to have her oats with her head lowered.
Ophelia came downstairs as well and chatted for a while until Brendan received a call and headed to the study.
Ophelia said, “I saw the caller ID earlier and saw that the person calling was the heiress of the Collins.”
She heaved a sigh and said, “What’s there to talk about that is so mysterious and can’t be overheard by others that he would stop having breakfast and hide in the study to take the call?”
Deirdre took a spoonful of the oats and explained on behalf of Brendan, “It’s possibly some business secrets. This kind of matter is rather complicated and can be quite difficult to discuss at the dining table. Moreover, he has access to the information of those projects in the study, so it will be easier for him to communicate there.”
“You make a fair point too. However, it would be best for you to advise him not to contact the Collins’ heiress so frequently.” Ophelia wiped her mouth. “I saw their photo yesterday, and they look like a well-matched couple. I couldn’t refrain from taking an extra glance at Miss Collins as a woman, let alone the fact that she is from an outstanding family. Any man with an entrepreneurial spirit would want to marry her so they can progress further in their career.”
“Mom…” Deirdre suddenly lost her appetite. “Brendan isn’t like that.”
“I hope so.” Ophelia heaved a sigh but did not continue to speak.
Yet, Deirdre had an uneasy feeling in her chest for no apparent reason.
After breakfast, Brendan was still in the study. Noticing the situation, Mrs. Engel prepared a bowl of oats and handed it to Deirdre on the second floor.
“Mrs. Brighthall, I shall knock on the door for you so you can send the oats to Mr. Brighthall. He didn’t manage to have his breakfast earlier.”
Deirdre wanted to reject the suggestion, but she thought about it from another perspective and figured she could go into the study and ask about the ophthalmologist while she was at it.
She carried the oats and heard the words ‘come in’ after Mrs. Engel knocked on the door.
Deirdre opened the door and placed the oats on the table. Brendan was still focused on rifling through the documents, so he did not react much after seeing the oats. He said, “I’m not eating now. Just place it there and leave.”
“Sure.”
Deirdre pulled back her hands in shock.
Brendan immediately raised his head upon hearing Deirdre’s voice. “Deirdre?”
His vexed expression from work was tainted with a tinge of joy. “I thought it was Mrs. Engel, but it’s you.”
He said in a tone that was gentler on purpose, “Are you done with breakfast?”
“Hmm… Mrs. Engel told me that you didn’t have much, so she got me to bring you some.”
“Yes, there’s something that is quite troubling.” Brendan stared at the document with tightly-furrowed eyebrows.
Deirdre asked in a probing manner, “Is Miss Collins reluctant to give the contact method of the ophthalmologist?”
“Emily Collins?”
Brendan was confused as to why Deirdre would suddenly mention her. He thought about it from another perspective and figured she wanted to know about her eye surgery all this time.
“Her matter has already been resolved. She promised me that she would come with the doctor this afternoon.”
Brendan inhaled a deep breath and held Deirdre’s hand in an attempt to sit her on his lap and wrap his arms around her waist. He wanted to calm himself by engaging in the most intimate position with her.
