Chapter 1017 Speak to You in Private
“Sure.” Brendan held Deirdre’s fingertips. “I’ll wait for you at home.”
Deirdre smiled and headed out with Emily.
After leaving the house, Emily teased with a spurious smile, “You seem to have a really close relationship with Mr. Brighthall, Miss McKinnon. This is my first time seeing Mr. Brighthall care so much about a woman. He couldn’t take his eyes off you. Had I not declined his offer, I figured that he would be following you without leaving.”
Deirdre had no idea how she should respond, so she said, “He’s just worried about me.”
“Is it because you’re pregnant?”
Deirdre nodded.
Emily smiled and said, “I think so too.”
Then, she got into the car and helped Deirdre to open the door.
Deirdre took a seat. She was under the assumption that Emily would inquire about something else, yet she did not speak much along the way. Instead, she kept herself busy with her tasks.
She made calls over and over again as if she was trying to show Deirdre that her status was equal to Brendan’s and that she was different from Deirdre, who could only be kept at home for show.
When they arrived at the hospital, Emily ended her call and said to Deirdre shyly, “I’m sorry, Miss McKinnon. I was busy with the company’s affairs. I believe that you’ve realized by now that I’m the sole decision-maker of Collins Pharmaceutical, judging by my phone conversations. Hence, all sorts of company affairs of different importance are handled by me.
“There are times that I envy you for not having to do anything after getting pregnant, Miss McKinnon. All you need to do is stay at home while Mr. Brighthall’s career is enough to ensure you a lifetime of luxury and glory.”
Deirdre found the remark to be unpleasant. She had her dreams and used to have a career of her own too. It was just that her current condition was restricting her. Emily made it out to be some kind of a bad thing.
She lowered her eyes and said calmly, “If you can’t handle the stress of running Collins Pharmaceutical, why don’t you get a man of equal capability to share the burden, Miss Collins?”
Emily narrowed her eyes. She understood Deirdre’s remark.
She used to think that a woman who depended on a man like Brendan would have low self-esteem and could be easily bullied. She did not expect that Deirdre would have a sharp tongue.
However, Emily sneered in contempt after a while and said meaningfully, “Thank you so much for your reminder, Miss McKinnon. I’m still looking around now.”
She opened the door first. “Let’s go, Miss McKinnon. This is a private hospital owned by Collins Pharmaceutical that is well-equipped. I believe that we will be able to find out your eyes’ condition soon.”
After a series of examinations, Emily received a report but did not comment anything after reading it. She got Deirdre into the car and drove back.
Brendan got downstairs almost simultaneously as the both of them returned to the mansion. “Deirdre.”
His eyes were filled with concern as he caressed the woman’s face. “Are you cold?”
Before Deirdre could answer, Emily smiled and chimed in first. “Don’t worry, Mr. Brighthall. Miss McKinnon is my patient. Since I took her out, I wouldn’t let her catch a cold. I protected Miss McKinnon very well throughout the whole examination process. You can set your mind at ease.”
Brendan understood what Emily meant. “That’s not what I mean.”
“It’s fine.” Emily said gracefully, “Do you have time, Mr. Brighthall? I would like to discuss Miss McKinnon’s condition with you for a moment.”
Brendan nodded solemnly.
They headed to the balcony and left Deirdre sitting on the sofa. Even though Deirdre could hear their conversation roughly from the sofa she was sitting on, she felt uneasy for some unknown reasons, especially when Emily’s first reaction after receiving the examination was not informing the patient but involving Brendan in a private discussion.
