Chapter 1019 Good Talk
“She didn’t tell you beforehand because she was afraid that you’d be worried before a treatment was decided.”
“Really?”
Deirdre was still doubtful.
“Hmm, if you’re not happy with everything being hidden from you, I’ll get you to join the next time.”
“Forget it.” Deirdre felt rather powerless because one could never forcefully involve oneself in a conversation. “It will be fine as long as you update me about my condition without any reservations.”
Perhaps she was being over-sensitive. After all, she would be rather concerned to know that there was a possibility of recovery from her blindness.
“Hmm.”
Brendan leaned over subconsciously in an attempt to kiss her.
Deirdre could feel Brendan’s movement and did not resist it. She held her breath and waited attentively, yet in the next moment, Brendan suddenly loosened his grip over her and removed himself from her.
“It’s time for dinner. I’ll see you to discuss your current condition after dinner.”
She caressed Deirdre’s hair.
Deirdre was caught in a daze. She nodded after recovering and got up to walk to the dining table.
Ophelia did not join the dinner because she did not feel like eating.
Mrs. Engel prepared a table full of meals while Emily stayed for dinner because she was still there. She sat down opposite Brendan and ate her meal.
Emily saw the name printed on the document in Brendan’s hand and said with a smile, “Are you having trouble with the Sullivans’ business in Trade City, Mr. Brighthall?”
“Hmm.” Brendan took a glance at Emily in surprise. “Are you aware of it?”
Emily shrugged in frustration. “I wouldn’t have known about it in the past, but now that I’m managing Collins Pharmaceutical by myself, I have to pay attention to any minute stir in Neve.
“I don’t recommend you test the water with the Sullivans’ collaboration this time.”
Brendan shifted away the document. “Why so?”
“It’s because the family almost exhausted its resources on the resort project previously. The Sullivans took out a loan from the bank two days ago because of this. It would perhaps work if the Sullivans were planning to invest all the money in the Trade City project, but my friend told me that the Sullivans just bought 100,000 blown film extrusion machines from him. Hence, they are going to have to cut costs in other areas. Where do you think that will be?”
Brendan tapped the table's surface with his fingertips and chatted with Emily on the project matters.
Emily talked with ease and fluency. She shared way too many mutual topics of conversation with Brendan.
Deirdre took small bites of her meal and felt a sense of panic for being incapable of joining the conversation.
She did not understand the rules of business, nor did she have a strong family background that allowed her to learn about these things. Hence, their conversation sounded unintelligible to her.
Deirdre could not help feeling stunned, and an idea emerged in her mind.
She wondered if Emily and Brendan were supposed to be a match made in heaven.
The more heated their conversation became, the more Deirdre felt out of place.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Engel came and requested Deirdre to taste the dessert in the kitchen.
Deirdre managed to escape the suffocating ambiance.
“What do you think of the pudding, Mrs. Brighthall?”
Deirdre took a bite, nodded, and smiled. “Pretty good.”
Mrs. Engel appeared to be conflicted. She took a glance at the living room and held Deirde’s hand. “Mrs. Brighthall, uh… Watch out for Ms. Collins. I can feel that she doesn’t have a sense of propriety.”
How could a woman engage in a heated conversation with a married man and neglect the man’s wife?
She felt uneasy just by looking from the side and found Deirdre to be caught in a very awkward situation.
Emily would never put someone in an awkward position like this if she was a smart person. The only viable explanation was that Emily did it on purpose.
Deirdre was stunned momentarily because she did not expect Mrs. Engel to be the first to notice her awkwardness.
Mrs. Engel would not have noticed so quickly if not because she was meticulous and cared about her.
