Chapter 1021 Get Him off the Pedestal
‘Am I being jealous?’
At the thought of this, Deirdre felt her chest suddenly tighten, and her heart was pounding.
Brendan lost track of time until he freed himself from work.
He felt a sharp pain radiating from his temples. He suppressed the feeling of lethargy and could not help cracking a smile at the thought of the woman waiting for him in the room.
He left the study and walked along the corridor to Deirdre’s room. Yet, he was caught off guard when he saw an enchanting figure standing there.
“Miss Collins?”
Emily turned around with a cigarette between her fingers. She put out the cigarette in embarrassment the moment she saw Brendan.
“Mr. Brighthall? You’re actually still in the study so late at night?”
Emily was astonished. Then, she smiled and said, “You caught me smoking, and it’s really quite embarrassing. Have I ruined my graceful image?”
Brendan was unbothered. “It’s a person’s choice to smoke, but it doesn’t ruin one’s image.”
“Is that so?” Emily appeared to be troubled. “However, my mother constantly told me since I was young that a woman who smokes is a bad woman. However, I’ve always been stubborn… Heh, I suppose you can say that I’m not opposing in public, right? I smoke a cigarette sneakily here and there, and afterward… I just couldn’t give it up.”
“That is just a shackle of virtue imposed on women. If men can smoke, women can too.” Brendan draped his jacket over his forearm and said in a calm tone, “You don’t need to degrade yourself just because of a senior family member’s remark.”
“I suppose so.” Emily smiled. “Thank you.”
Brendan nodded. He was preparing to walk away when Emily said, “Would you mind telling me what caused Miss McKinnon’s eye injury?
“I checked the CT scan, and I can see that Miss McKinnon’s injury wasn’t considered very serious in the beginning. If she had received treatment in time, she would have totally been able to regain her sight, and it wouldn’t be so difficult as now.”
Brendan furrowed his eyebrows tightly, his dark eyes tainted with guilt.
“It was my fault.”
Emily was surprised to hear that. “So, is this your compensation to Miss McKinnon, Mr. Brighthall?”
“This is not compensation.” Brendan said in a deep voice, “My effort is nothing. I’m only seeking her slightest forgiveness while loving her.”
Emily dropped her cigarette butt.
Brendan was such a powerful man, yet he behaved so lowly right now as if he was a sinner of unrequited love.
Emily felt uneasy in her heart.
‘How does someone as menial as Deirdre get him off the pedestal?’
She composed herself with great effort. “If you don’t mind me asking more, how did she get the blood clot in her brain? How long has it been?”
Brendan had already grown impatient from waiting. “Is this important?”
Emily smiled. “It’s important, of course. My treatment method is to understand the patient’s condition thoroughly in order to provide the best treatment for the patient, Mr. Brighthall. Moreover, you might not want me to ask Miss McKinnon these questions, right? It’s possible that she would be traumatized.”
Deirdre woke up from a nightmare and subconsciously touched the space next to her. She was surprised that the space next to her was empty.
‘What time is it?’
She vaguely remembered falling asleep at 10:00 p.m. ‘Why isn’t Brendan here yet?’
She turned over and got out of bed. The room was so quiet that she could hear the conversation outside.
Deirdre walked over and opened a small gap at the door. She could hear the voices clearer instantly.
Those were Emily and Brendan’s voices.
They were talking at a nearby spot and were engaging in a heated conversation.
Deirdre was stunned. ‘Is this the reason Brendan still hasn’t come?’
