Chapter 230
Claire's POV
"Why are you sneaking up on me?" I gasped, my heart racing.
"Sorry," he said quickly.
"It's fine. You're home early today," I said, frowning. It wasn't the weekend.
"I bought some cod for Betty. She mentioned wanting some," he explained, holding up a grocery bag.
I nodded. "That's sweet of you."
"I want to thank you for helping these past weeks," Hank said, his eyes filled with what looked like guilt.
"Betty's my sister. Of course I'd help."
"She's young and sometimes says mean things. Please don't take it personally," he continued, his face pained.
It was weird hearing him say this. In the two weeks I'd been here, Hank had barely talked to me, though I sometimes caught him staring when he thought I wasn't looking.
Betty had been getting colder toward me, her words often sharp. I'd figured it was postpartum depression, but apparently Hank had noticed too.
"Being a new mom is hard," I said carefully. "As her husband, you should give her more attention and love."
