Chapter 40
Talon’s POV
After I put away the last pile of files for the day, I sank into the chair by my desk and stared out at the pouring rain. My thoughts wandered.
The conversation with Ethan hadn’t gone as I’d hoped.
I had tried—again and again—to get him to reconsider, but he was more adamant than ever. The plan was moving forward.
He could deny it all he wanted, but I knew he cared about Rosalie.
I just needed to find a way to make him see it.
I had to do something.
“Talon!”
Vicky’s voice rang from the other side of the door, followed by a sharp knock. I shot up and opened it quickly.
She stormed in, clearly upset.
“What’s wrong?” I asked immediately, on high alert. “Did something happen?”
She didn’t answer at first—just stared at me with a mixture of fury and sorrow.
I had a terrible feeling.
“Is Rosalie okay?!” I pressed.
She looked at me like I was a stranger. “Like you care,” she snapped coldly.
“What?” Her words caught me off guard.
Tears lined her eyes—Vicky never cried.
