Mae’s POV
I’m on my kitchen floor, back against the cabinetry, wine glass in hand, staring at Aaron. The scene feels familiar, like déjà vu.
Suddenly, he’s holding my face in his hands, and something feels off. It should be my hands on him. It should be me approaching him.
Instead, his face comes closer. I expect the same tender touch of our foreheads that happened last time, but he comes at me with his lips instead. It feels aggressive instead of intimate.
I pull away.
Aaron watches me, and something like guilt flashes through his eyes. I relax a fraction as I recognize the behavior I’ve come to expect from him, even if it’s new and unlike the man he’s been for our entire lives.
But then he shakes his head. I’m so distracted by the familiarity of it that I can’t quite place, that I don’t wonder why he’s shaking his head at me. I focus only on the nuances of the motion, feeling certain that I’ve seen the exact movement on someone else.
