ELIZA’S POV
I found myself face-to-face with Alexander.
His blue eyes softened as he studied me. He had something in his eyes—concern, maybe even understanding.
“Eliza,” he said gently “I know how you feel. Learning the truth like that… it’s a lot to take in. But drinking yourself into oblivion won’t change anything.”
I swallowed hard, not wanting to meet his gaze. It wasn’t just the truth that had sent me spiraling—it was everything.
The war, the constant fight for survival, the fact that my father and brother died for this.
But then, Alexander’s eyes landed on the flask still in my grip. His gaze lingered, and I could see the discipline in his expression wavering ever so slightly.
Ah.
I knew that look. I’d seen it plenty of times from soldiers and other travelers alike. He wanted a drink.
Biting back a smile, I rubbed at my sore nose, pretending not to notice. I didn’t say a word as Alexander turned on his heel and walked toward the command tent with the flask in hand.
