MAYA’S POV
The pain was unbearable.
I lay on my stomach. My body burned from the searing lashes of the military cane.
Twenty strokes.
Twenty excruciating marks seared into my back for doing nothing but speaking the truth.
My muscles trembled as I sucked in a breath, forcing myself not to make a sound.
