Clayton took a few steps forward and stopped at the bottom of the steps, waiting for Charisse to walk over.
Maxwell held her arm, so it was easy for him to notice just how tense she was now.
He glanced at her with worried eyes. She stood stiff and straight, chin lifted slightly, her profile sharp like a drawn bowstring ready to snap at any time.
She gently pushed his hand away. "Thanks, Dr. Reid. You've done enough."
She looked unusually pale, lips drained of color from the blood loss, her whole appearance frail and fragile.
But when she stepped toward Clayton, there was no hesitation at all.
Clayton smiled as he watched her approach. Once she got close, he placed a hand on her shoulder. "You okay? They didn't give you any trouble, did they?"
