Charisse could feel just how broken her father was. She rushed to say, "Dad, please, don't overthink it. Don't do anything stupid. I really can't lose you too."
Claire chimed in, "Yeah, Arthur, it's already happened. Let's just try to move forward. Even if... even if they took that liver out now, it's not like it could go back to where it came from."
But Arthur didn't dare look back.
Looking back just meant more gossip, more fingers pointed at him and Charisse. His daughter being tied to Clayton and dragged into all that mess—they'd be blamed forever.
Looking back was nothing but despair.
Arthur was exhausted, more so than he'd ever been. The weight on his chest felt like it could crush him.
Why did the world have to be so damn hard?
"You two go," he muttered, weakly lifting his hand.
"Dad…"
Claire lightly pulled Charisse's arm, giving her a small shake of the head.
"He'll be fine," she whispered near Charisse's ear. "Let him cool off."
There was a nurse inside and bodyguards outside.
