When the flames burst out along the riverside, a ferry slowly cruised across the dark water, neon reflections rippling across its wake.
Hanson Bentley stood at the bow, his suit jacket casually slung over one shoulder. Chin propped on one hand, he calmly watched the sudden fire blaze up in one of the houses onshore, letting the autumn wind wash across his face. His other hand, fingers long and defined, tapped rhythmically on the railing—like some lazy pianist playing a quiet tune.
“You think it looks kinda pretty?” he asked lightly, not looking back as footsteps sounded behind him. The tapping of his fingers subtly quickened.
Behind him stood a middle-aged man in a white coat and glasses. The man didn't react to the question, just stared at the fire for a long moment before speaking slowly: “Mr. Bentley, the girl you brought aboard has regained consciousness. Do you want to go see her?”
