AUBREY'S POV
The scream tore through me like a physical wound. I knew that voice—would know it anywhere. Merlin. Just hours ago, she had been helping me into my wedding dress, her eyes bright with tears of joy as she pinned my mother's brooch to my bodice. "Something borrowed," she had said with that gentle smile of hers.
I spun toward the sound, my ruined wedding dress tangling around my legs. Through the smoke and chaos of battle, I saw them. Jax had Merlin by the throat, holding her aloft like a trophy. Her feet dangled above the ground, and even from here I could see the terror in her eyes. The moonlight streaming through the shattered windows turned her skin alabaster, making the growing bruises on her neck stand out like ink stains.
