Chapter3
Before Caleb could even reach the mansion.
Celeste was already waiting at the entrance.
If Caleb hadn't been nearly home, Celeste might have sent a second group to hurry him along.
"Darling, I made your favorite dishes. You must be tired."
Celeste considerately took his coat and prepared his indoor shoes for him.
Her voice was as captivating as an angel's.
She was so gentle and lovely.
No wonder Caleb chose her.
If I were a man, I'd also choose a woman with her family background, looks, gentleness, and attentiveness.
I had never met Celeste before, yet I felt I'd seen her somewhere.
But I couldn't remember how or where.
"It's nothing. Seeing you puts my mind at ease."
Caleb's frosty demeanor melted away, replaced by a gaze full of tenderness as he reassured her.
It had been so long since I'd seen Caleb like this.
In the early days of our love, he had been just as tender with me.
But later, he grew gradually colder towards me.
Celeste was an excellent cook.
A table full of exquisite dishes was meticulously arranged.
Seeing this, Caleb said with tender concern, "Sasha, you're pregnant. You shouldn't exert yourself like this. Leave such things to the servants."
Celeste smiled gracefully. "I just wanted to cook a meal with my own hands for the person I love most. It's no trouble at all."
The way they cared for each other seemed so perfectly matched.
Perhaps they were the true pair, and I was the interloper.
Seeing this scene today made me realize I should have stepped aside sooner.
Well, it's fine now. I'm dead anyway.
With someone so attentive by Caleb's side.
I don't have to worry about him being alone.
Just then, a maid brought in the freshly made soup but accidentally spilled half of it.
Celeste's face suddenly twisted. "How incompetent! My hard work, ruined by a worthless wench like you!"
She raised her hand and slapped the maid hard across the face.
The maid knelt on the floor, frantically apologizing.
Celeste's ferocious expression was like a thunderclap exploding in my mind.
That look, that face—I could never forget it!
Back then, I was following the patrol squad.
Just as I found it strange we weren't taking the usual route, we were ambushed in a dead-end.
A group of people in black cloaks appeared. I caught their scent—witches.
The woman leading them was Celeste.
"Miss, how should we deal with these?"
"Knock the others out. As for her... aren't you lacking test subjects for poison trials? Use her."
She also wore a black cloak, revealing only her eyes, but her scent—I could never mistake it.
"You few, enjoy her. Don't let her get too lonely."
Celeste gestured, and several men lunged at me like starving wolves.
I fought back fiercely, but I was already trapped in a poisonous trap. Agony overwhelmed me; only my conscious will, clinging to the desire not to die, remained.
What my body, out of my control, was forced to do, I've mostly forgotten.
I only remember that my sole desire to survive was Caleb.
"Caleb... save me..."
Celeste sneered coldly, "You will never see Caleb again. He belongs only to me."
Those were the last words I heard before dying.
A sudden shock ran through my spirit.
I never knew Celeste was such a vicious woman.
And she was involved with witches.
With her by Caleb's side, wouldn't he be in danger?
But watching Celeste now, so obedient to Caleb, her eyes filled with love for him...
This worry in my heart completely vanished.
Celeste loved Caleb so much, how could she possibly harm him?
As long as he never finds out about my death, they can be happy forever.
If Caleb can be happy forever, perhaps my death is for the best.
I hope Caleb doesn't go looking for news about me.
Let me just vanish, silently and without a trace.
