I hesitated, looking over my schedule. “Is this work, or is this just an excuse to get us all out together?”
Ethan laughed softly. “Does it matter? I think you need a break. We all do.”

“I want to,” I cut in, already picking up a piece and holding it near his mouth.
He opened his mouth and took the bite, smiling around it. “You’re spoiling me.”

Allen walked in with a folder in hand. He froze when he saw us. For a second, none of us moved.
Then Allen acted like everything was perfectly normal. “Oh, lunch. Perfect timing.”
He walked straight to the side table, grabbed a chair, and sat down next to us like it was just another casual afternoon.

Allen glanced between us. “What? Did I walk into something?”

I gave a small nod. “Yeah. Kind of out of nowhere. He just said it like it was no big deal. Like, ‘let’s just get remarried.”
Rachel stared at me for a long time. “And how do you feel about that?”
I let out a soft sigh. “Confused. I mean, I appreciate that he’s trying, I really do. But he said it too casually. There was no plan, no ring, no effort. It’s like he just assumed I’d say yes.”
“Did you say yes?” Rachel asked carefully.
“I said I’d think about it.”
Rachel nodded slowly. “That’s fair.”
“I don’t want to go back to how things were before,” I said. “I want to know that he’s really changed. Not just with his words, but with actions.
I don’t believe a wedding is just a formality. It’s more than that. It’s a promise. And I want it to be real this time.”
Rachel went quiet for a moment. Then she spoke gently. “You deserve that. You deserve everything, Katelyn. And if he’s serious, he’ll prove it.”
My phone buzzed with a work notification.
I looked at Rachel and gave her a small smile. “I need to go. Work.”
“Go,” she said. “But don’t let him off easy.”
“I won’t.” and hung up because of work.
