The newsroom was buzzing louder than usual. Phones rang, printers spat out sheets, and groups of reporters gathered in every corner, voices overlapping in excitement.
Word had spread that the station would be selecting several journalists to report on breaking stories in Pakistan. It was all anyone could talk about.
People whispered about the dangers, yes, but mostly they talked about the prestige, the chance to be at the center of something global.
“I’m signing up,” a younger reporter said as I passed. His eyes gleamed.
“Are you insane?” another asked, though even she hovered near the sign-up sheet.
I didn’t hesitate. The moment I saw the notice, I walked straight up to the desk, took the pen, and wrote my name. My hand didn’t shake.
Fallon appeared at my side not long after, her brow creased but her tone steady. “You’re really doing this?”
“Yes,” I said. “It’s important. Someone has to tell the story from the ground.”
