At first, I just stood there, stunned by the sight of him. The last person I expected to see again so soon, Tessa’s father.
He looked the same as before, quiet, tired, yet somehow grounded in a way that made the world feel a little steadier.
He noticed my hesitation and gave me a small nod. “You still need that spot?” he asked.
I blinked and stepped back, surprised by the offer. “Are you sure? You were here first.”
“I told you,” he said, already opening his door. “I’m just here to pick up a prescription. I won’t be long. Take it.”
As he stepped aside, I finally saw her. Tessa.
She sat quietly in the backseat, her small hands folded over a stuffed bear that looked like it had been through a lot.
Her eyes were the same, watchful and wide. But her lips were slightly parted, her breathing shallow.
“She’s sick?” I asked softly.
He nodded, locking the car. “Fever. Been getting worse the last few days. I wanted to wait it out, but I figured I shouldn’t risk it.”
