Masking Spell
Kara
The days that followed were filled with me planning on how I was going to leave the pack unnoticed and me pretending to be the perfect submissive Luna they wanted.
Ryder and everyone thought they molded me into something that couldn’t rebel. They didn’t know all I was searching and needed was proof. Evidence strong enough to destroy him and everyone who thought power made them untouchable.
So, while I put on the act of a fragile Luna who flinched and obeyed everything they said, I kept on watching. I spent my days moving like a ghost in the pack house, receiving pitiful glances everywhere and no one spoke to me apart from the maid, not after Ryder’s and his mother's public humiliation. I even thanked Sasha when she and her friends humiliated me publicly.
I discovered that Ryder was embezzling the pack’s funds which were meant for warriors and new infrastructure. The money was being sent to accounts under false names. I copied everything. For the first time in years, after that mind blowing sex I had with Lucien, I felt alive.
Then, I came upon harsher truth. I saw bruised, tattered warriors who refused to speak, Omegas who trembled just at the sight of Ryder and noticed that some even disappeared quietly with no traces. It had been going on for years and I didn’t notice as I was too consumed with my own grief. Fear dominated our pack and Ryder controlled it.
One night, I found a young Omega male sobbing quietly behind the training hall. His arm was broken and his left eyes swollen and shut. When I touched him, he flinched.
“What happened?” I asked worriedly.
At my words, he shook his head violently. “Please, Luna. If…if he knows, he’s going to destroy my family!”
I knew who he was talking about and felt angry and sad, but there was nothing I could do. I wiped away his tears and led him to the pack infirmary.
After I had gathered enough evidence, I knew I had to leave before Ryder discovered what he had signed. If he realized he no longer held the rights of the Alpha or our marriage was dissolved, he was going to destroy me. He would destroy my body and soul, just to prove he could and make me regret my actions till the end of my life.
Two days passed and the opportunity I had been waiting for arrived. Sasha appeared at dinner, draped in Ryder’s scent, the smile she sent my way was smug and wicked. Ryder didn’t even bother hiding his relationship with her anymore. As long as his mother approved it, the rules of mating meant nothing.
“Baby, when are we leaving?” She pursed, blinking her fake lashes at him sexily.
“We should go soon,” he answered with a smirk. Sasha’s eyes landed on me, as if expecting me to lash out but I ignored them, eating the mashed potatoes and steak heartily. She frowned before ignoring me. I felt Ryder’s gaze on me but I refused to stare back at him, afraid of losing my appetite.
After some minutes, they left the dining room. My ears pecked up as I listened to the sound of Ryder’s car driving off.
Perfect.
I stood up immediately and hurried back to my room. I walked into the innermost corner of the walk-in-closet and took out the documents I had hidden. My hand shook slightly as I held it but not with fear. If Ryder ever discovered what I was doing, I knew a terrible fate would await me. But the thought of that made me smile.
The old me would have cried but the new me didn’t care.
Then, it was the dangerous part, my scent. As long as Ryder or his trackers could sniff me out, no matter where I go, I would be found. I needed a witch to help me mask my scent and I knew one person who could do that.
Mira.
She was my friend until Ryder banished witches from our land and I hoped she would help me. I took out my phone and called her immediately. She picked after the third ring. I explained my plight to her and she gave me a spot to come meet her.
I sneaked out of the house and went to the riverbank where we used to meet. For a moment, I feared she wasn’t going to come but then, she appeared. With a bag.
“You’ve finally decided,” she murmured, looking at me with pride. “I told you to leave that bastard. Took you long enough to come to a conclusion,”
“Why are you with a bag, Mi?” I asked, baffled.
“Because I have decided to follow you. This place is becoming more boring as the days pass by and I need some actions in my life. The human world would give me that, so….i have decided to follow you.”
I stared wide eyed at her until I burst out laughing. “Okay. We can go together.”
She nodded immediately with a smile and casted a spell. “It is done. You have three days until they realize your scent is gone,” Mira warned. “You must have already disappeared before then.”
I didn’t need that long. I was planning on leaving tonight. “Thank you, Mira, but we are leaving tonight.”
“C’mon. Let’s go!”
The guard I bribed stood at the west gate. His hands trembled as he unlocked the barrier. If Ryder discovered this, the guard’s death would be inevitable, and I would be blamed for it too. For a second, I felt guilty but then I remembered every humiliation I had endured. No guilt could match that humiliation.
I stepped out of the gate. For the first time in five years I felt like I could live.
As we stepped into the lush green forest, I dropped my bag that contained some of my clothes and essentials and the documents I had stolen. I took off my clothes and changed into my wolf. The familiar sting of pain welcomed me as my bones broke and merged together. My pure white fur glistened in the light of the darkness.
Narah shook her body and picked up our bag with her mouth. I gestured for Mira to sit on my back, and began running crazily towards the border between us and the human world.
Hours later, we got to the border and I changed back to my human form, naked.
