Chapter 16 Come Back Home With Me

At that moment, Myles’ usual sharp and icy aura had vanished. Even the space between his eyebrows betrayed the formation of a warm smile. It was as if his heart started melting once that woman crossed his mind. Could it be because they were married? Myles struggled to comprehend it, but his momentary silence heightened the attention of the other two people. “You really have a girlfriend?!” Grandpa Jennings was the first to speak, his tone revealing his surprise. Lately, he had been going around asking people to find a good partner for Myles, but now it seemed he had been over-worrying for nothing. “Son, which family does this young lady belong to? Is she a local? What do her parents do?” Mrs. Jennings was equally joyous, so excited that she got up from the couch and walked to Myles’ side, her eyes sparkling as she looked at him. Seeing this, half of Myles’ still heart started beating again. “She’s a local. Her name is Annie Lane and she’s a Jennings Corp. employee. She’s very special. I’m very fond of her.” A gentle smile hung from the corners of Myles’ mouth. The Jennings were a large and highly successful family, but they did not hold pedigree in high regard. As Jennings Corp.'s prospering development had no need of strategic marriages, Myles was very much free to choose his lover. In reality, as long as he was willing to date, Grandpa Jennings and Mrs. Jennings were both so happy they felt like burning tons of incense for the gods out of gratitude. “Good, good, good. You have a good eye, that’s for sure. Annie Lane—this name sounds like a good woman. Find some time to bring her over for a meal. Let us see her, so we can truly take a load off our minds.” The corners of Grandpa Jennings’ mouth were almost spreading to the back of his ears. His happiness could not be described with words. Beside him, Mrs. Jennings echoed the smile. She knew there was a knot in Myles’ heart that simply could not be untangled, which was why she had always been anxious to find a girlfriend for him. She only hoped he could forget about that woman from before. Back then, when that Rowan girl left him, Myles fell into a state of madness. His temper had also become very odd, and Mrs. Jennings had been very concerned all the while. Now, he had finally seen reason. As long as it was anyone but that Rowan from back then, Mrs. Jennings was happy. “Alright.” Myles’ unmoving heart could finally start beating wholly. He had been planning to wait until Grandpa and Mrs. Jennings had fully accepted Annie before informing them about the marriage certificate. Otherwise… their next step could very possibly be to start spawning… As his thoughts wandered, Myles found himself unexpectedly looking forward to it a little. His and Annie’s children? However… He wiped away this thought the instant it appeared. Women. He had already been wronged by a woman once; how could he still trust in them? Having thought to this point, Myles wiped the smile off his face. His somber eyes went dark. When he came out of the old house, the sky had already dimmed. The light of the sunset hung at the edge of the sky, but there was no trace of it. “Ms. Lane met up with Ethan Larson at a coffee shop in the afternoon, then they went shopping together. Ms. Lane returned two hours ago.” Hugh dutifully gave his report to the slightly out-of-sorts Myles while he drove. This was the new job Myles had given him. The personal assistant of the lofty Jennings Corp.’s president was reduced to following a young lady and recording her actions and who she met. He could not help but feel a little embarrassed. “Okay. Bring her home now.” After hearing this report, Myles relaxed. The heavy thoughts from earlier vanished instantly. How long had it been since he had enjoyed such a satisfying and comfortable moment? Not being suffocated by his high-pressure job, or his heart lingering over someone. He could now really use the word “home”. Myles felt that aside from his job, his life had suddenly been given new meaning. “Will do.” Hugh drove steadily, but he was actually very moved. He had been by Myles’ side for so many years, yet this was the first time he had seen Myles so happy. Even if he was made to stalk Annie a few more times, he would do so willingly. With nothing to inform Annie beforehand, Myles invited himself into the house rather familiarly. Seeing Annie and Sharon sitting at the dining table, he sat down beside Annie, ignoring their shock. “Mr…” Because Myles’ status had changed, Sharon did not know how to address him anymore. Although he was her daughter’s husband, the gap between them was truly too large… “Auntie, just call me Jens.” Annie had been stuffing an egg into her mouth when she saw Myles. She was so startled that she could not swallow and spat the egg back out. “Why did you come here?” Compared to Sharon’s pleasant temperament, Annie felt she had been tricked. All afternoon, she had the nagging feeling that something was off somewhere. She could not quite come to terms with the reality that she had become a wife. “I’ve come to bring you home.” Myles took the initiative to sit by the table. Sharon filled a bowl of rice for him and passed him a pair of chopsticks. “It’s a simple and bland meal. It might not suit your tastes.” Sharon pretty much understood the power Myles represented. While Annie was with him, nobody would dare bully her again, so Sharon was particularly pleased. Myles cheerfully accepted the chopsticks and began to eat without a hint of displeasure, ignoring the stunned looks from Annie beside him. Home? The word was too foreign to her. The only home she had now was this rental house. This space of not twenty square meters had borne her youth, her joys and sorrows. She had always dreamed of having a home with Mason, but that all came to naught.
