Chapter 8 The Fun Starts Later

In the next two days, Annie was busier than usual, submitting her résumé to find a new job. Strangely, despite her perfect résumé, she did not receive any interview notices. After waiting for two days with no news, Annie could only ask her school’s teacher to help find out about the situation. “Annie, you’ve always been so outstanding. I don’t know why you were fired from Jennings Group, but the Jennings Group’s president has spread the word within the circle, so now no company dares to hire you. Otherwise… You could try working in other fields.” Those words were still replaying in her mind after she hung up. Annie never expected that the cold man would be so petty as to seal off her back-up plan! Engaging in other work? It was not that Annie had never thought of that, but her name was now already blacklisted in all the big companies, wasn't it? Annie graduated from a top local university. Being forced to find a bottom-level job was a waste of her talents, and just the thought of it made her resentful. Carrying these heavy feelings, Annie returned to Jennings Corp. However, she was ejected before she even entered the elevator. She was even personally dismissed by Myles’s personal assistant, Hugh. “Ms. Lane, the president said that if you want to see him, you’ll have to attend tomorrow’s wedding. The gown has already been prepared for you and will be sent to your house shortly. Take care, Ms. Lane.” After finishing this sentence, Hugh turned to leave. Despite just ejecting Annie from the Jennings Headquarters, his tone was exceedingly polite. Annie, however, was totally confused. “What exactly does he mean?” She had not planned to attend the wedding tomorrow. As of now, she was still unable to stand seeing Mason and another woman being lovey-dovey. The scene of her humiliation that day was still vivid in her mind, and she could not let it go no matter what. “The president said that he only feels sorry for you.” With those words, Hugh left immediately without giving Annie another chance to speak. He was just parroting Myles, though he did not comprehend the deep meaning behind those words he had been sent to deliver. If he had not walked away so quickly, he would have caught the expression of mingled shame and anger on Annie’s face. ‘Sorry’?! Annie was about to go mad from anger. Why did she keep meeting crazy people in the past two days?! The thing that tested her sanity the most was still to come. When Annie returned home, she discovered that the clothes Sharon had just washed and hung out to dry had all fallen to the ground and were covered in fresh footprints. Sharon's pleading voice traveled out from inside the house. “Sophie, don’t make things difficult for Annie anymore. She doesn't pose any sort of threat to you!” Standing outside the door, Annie suddenly dashed into the house upon hearing these words. Dressed in a high class, custom-made dress, Sophie stood with her head lifted as high as a peacock as she looked at Sharon with a conceited look on her face. “Sophie Lane, get out of my house!” If the old Annie was someone who would resign herself to adversity, then the current Annie definitely would not continue to endure this. Her man had already been stolen, so what more did she have left to lose? “Hey, the unemployed bum is back? So how’s it going? Still haven't found a job?” Sophie folded her arms and looked haughtily at the plainly-dressed Annie. The powder on her face looked exceptionally stiff due to the over-the-top expression on her face. Ignoring the mockery, Annie glanced over at Sharon. Her eyes were already red, but she did not display any shock. It seemed like the secret she hid for three days had already been exposed by Sophie. “It has nothing to do with you. Get out of my house. If you come over to bully us again, don’t be surprised if I don’t treat you nicely!” Annie was no longer her previous self. She would no longer be a silent martyr, because there were some people who were so shameless that the more she endured, the more she would suffer! Clearly shocked by Annie’s attitude, Sophie paused for a second before laughing derisively. “Hmph, it seems I’ve underestimated you. But even as you are now, what can you do about it? Tomorrow, I’ll be marrying Mason. Does it hurt that the man you’ve loved for so many years has turned to my embrace? Do you know why Mason never touched you all that time? He thinks you’re dirty, and your birth status is too lowly! Hehe, he’s a smart guy and knows who can help him. If he’s with me, that’s thirty fewer years he’ll have to struggle, but what if he was with you? Living a bitter life? Annie Lane, you shouldn’t hate me. If you want to hate something, then you should hate the fact that you had to be born in this world!” Sophie spoke cruelly, her twisted personality showing through her savage expression, making her exquisite makeup look somewhat grotesque. Being yelled at with a finger pointed at her nose, the blood rushed into Annie’s brain. Sophie's words were like a sharp blade stabbing into her heart, hurting her so much she could not speak! However, she could take action! The moment the sound of Sophie’s voice fell, with all the blood that rushed to her head, Annie took a step forward, lifted her arm, and swung out at Sophie with a slap. She put her entire body’s strength into the hit, not holding back at all. Sophie had no time to react and was hit so hard that her body bent to the side, falling on the bed. “This slap is payback! Sophie Lane, leave now and never test me again!” Annie took the opportunity to pull on Sophie’s arm and drag her directly outside. At this moment, her heart was aflame with anger, which fueled her with strength. Sophie could not even retaliate before she was shoved out and the door was slammed behind her with a bang.
