Chapter 7276
Dan lifted his wineglass and took a sip. Then he asked coolly. "What is it, then?"
Gaius narrowed his eyes and slowly said, "The most important thing we must do now is to compensate Beresford."
Dan slowly said, "We didn't injure Beresford. Why should we compensate him? Isn't it best for him to live on as he resents both Harvey and Lanny?"
Gaius smiled. "True. We didn't cause his injuries. But don't forget how much we nudged things behind the scenes. Even if Beresford is a fool, he's backed by an entire family with Divine Lineage and the Knights Templar.
"If his family started digging for the truth, we would have really sabotaged ourselves. That's why we need to compensate him and make sure he's satisfied at this time. That way, he'll stand with us regardless of who's right or wrong and fight Harvey to the end."
Gaius continued, "I know you'll find it disgraceful to speak meekly toward someone like Beresford. That's why you don't need to personally handle this. Leave it to me. All I need is your approval."
Gaius knew full well that no matter what he was going to do, he needed to show Dan respect. He loved the feeling of being in control, as if he were pulling the strings.
After giving it a thought, Dan finally nodded. "Alright. You've always been reliable. Since you made the request, I'll leave it in your capable hands."
"Thank you for your trust, Mr. Dan," Gaius smiled faintly with a respectful expression. "There's one more thing, however. I believe that we should stop doing anything else before the Hierophant's birthday celebration is over.
"Originally, we had a guaranteed win. But we've overplayed our hands in these past few days and made too many mistakes. From my estimation, your chances of becoming mayor are less than ninety percent now. Make any more mistakes and we'll lose even more chances. That's why you must endure for now, no matter how begrudging you feel. Your patience will open up more doors for us."
Dan narrowed his eyes before saying, "I know what you mean. It's best if we don't do anything instead of taking action. As long as I stay calm, not even Wenzel can stop me. We shouldn't make any more mistakes.
"But Gaius, while you're brilliant at scheming, you're overlooking one thing. When our reputation falters, we need to do something to rally morale. Since Harvey is just too difficult to handle, we'll ignore him for now. We'll consider him invisible. We can deal with him once I've become mayor.
"But before this happens, we cannot allow traitors in our faction. Harvey can live for now, but Lanny must die. How am I supposed to lead if she's still alive?"
