Derek had already noticed that something was off about Samantha's expression. So when she struggled to pull her legs out of the water, he grabbed the chance to steady her by the arm, his other hand sneaking around her slim waist. Leaning closer, he murmured into her ear with a teasing voice,
"Feeling dizzy, gorgeous? You can lean on me if you want. I don't mind helping you up."
Samantha frowned and immediately shook him off, her voice weak but firm. "No thanks, I do mind. Mr. Thompson, keep your hands to yourself."
"Women who act tough usually hide how lonely they are," Derek remarked, lips curled in what he thought was a charming smile.
Having dealt with countless women, Derek always knew where to press. The harder the target, the deeper he aimed for the emotional core. And usually, it worked like a charm.
He figured a little heart-to-heart would do the trick with this proud woman. One shared smile, some well-placed words, and boom—she'd be his.
