Chapter 6 Let's Not Divorce
The next morning, after getting up early, freshening up, and finishing breakfast, Veronica reapplied the dark patch on her face with a special solution.
She then got into her car and drove toward the courthouse.
This time, both she and Gregory arrived on time. She glanced at him sideways, removed her sunglasses, and walked straight into the courthouse without looking back.
With every step forward, Veronica felt calmer and even relieved. Today, the large courthouse had only one staff member present.
She knew Gregory had arranged this in advance. After all, their marriage had always been kept secret.
Apart from their families and a few close friends, no one else knew that Veronica, the adopted daughter the Walsh family had brought back from the countryside, was actually Gregory's wife. She had always been the mysterious Mrs. Sutton.
Gregory handed the marriage certificate and divorce agreement to the staff member, but she didn't take them. Instead, she looked at him awkwardly. "I'm sorry, Mr. Sutton, I can't process the divorce for you and Mrs. Sutton."
Hearing this, Veronica was the first to furrow her brows. "Why not?"
The staff member's expression stiffened slightly. She blinked and pointed behind Gregory and Veronica. "Well, because…"
Before she could finish, a hand suddenly reached out and grabbed Gregory by the ear. At the same time, a furious voice rang out, sharp and intimidating.
"You ungrateful brat! You dare divorce Veronica behind my back!"
Gregory looked at his grandmother, Madilynn Blair, tugging his ear. Her face was twisted in anger, while his handsome features showed complete helplessness. "Grandma…"
"Enough nonsense! Come back with me right now." Madilynn gave him no chance to respond, scolding him sharply as she grabbed his ear and marched him straight toward the door.
She then turned and added, "Veronica, you're coming too."
…
Soon, they arrived at the Sutton residence.
"Mrs. Sutton Senior, please get down. What are you doing?" Veronica's voice was filled with urgency and helplessness.
She saw Madilynn holding a hemp rope looped over the doorway of Gregory's bedroom. Standing on a stool, she made her intentions unmistakably clear—she was threatening to hang herself.
Gripping the rope tightly with both hands, Madilynn glared at them. Her presence was fierce, and her voice rang out strong and unwavering.
"If you two insist on getting a divorce, then I'll hang myself right here today," she declared.
"Mrs. Sutton Senior, please come down. You might fall."
Veronica's face was full of worry as she reached out to help Madilynn, but Madilynn dodged her hand.
Madilynn looked down at her. "Veronica, I know it must be this scoundrel who forced you, right? Don't worry, with me here, there's no way I'll let you two get a divorce."
Veronica quickly explained, "It's not like that, Mrs. Sutton Senior. Gregory and I decided to divorce three years ago, but I was rushing to go abroad at the time, so it got delayed."
Gregory immediately added, "Grandma, Veronica and I have no feelings for each other. Please stop forcing us."
Madilynn shot Gregory a sharp glare and replied coldly, "No feelings? Can't they be developed? Don't think I don't know, three years ago, when Camelia returned to Bircanda City, you wanted to divorce Veronica and then marry her, didn't you?"
She added, "You want a divorce? Fine, then I'll hang myself right now."
As she spoke, Madilynn actually slipped her neck into the rope and lifted her foot, making it look like she was about to kick the stool away.
"Mrs. Sutton Senior!" Veronica gasped, her face turning pale.
"Alright, Grandma. I promise you, we won't get divorced, okay?" Gregory said helplessly, finally giving in.
Even though he knew she would never truly hang herself, he had no way to deal with her.
When Veronica heard his words, she frowned deeply and turned to look at him.
"Really?" Madilynn asked suspiciously, turning to look at him.
"Really," Gregory said with a nod.
Only then did Madilynn's expression soften slightly. "That's more like it."
After removing the rope, Madilynn reached out to Veronica. "Veronica, help me down, hurry. Oh, my back."
Veronica and Gregory rushed forward, supporting Madilynn from either side and carefully helping her down from the stool.
At that moment, the housekeeper, Eleanor Harper, stepped in and helped Madilynn walk away.
Gregory looked at Veronica, his tone flat and cool. "Veronica, come into the room with me."
With that, he went into the bedroom first.
"Go ahead, Veronica," Madilynn said with a smile, gently nudging her forward.
Veronica pressed her lips together briefly, then followed him inside and closed the door behind her.
"Grandma will never approve of our divorce, so we'll have to handle this carefully," Gregory said, frowning deeply, his face tense and laced with barely restrained anger.
"I'll talk to Grandma myself," Veronica replied calmly.
Hearing this, Gregory lifted his gaze to her, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.
His eyes brimmed with disdain and disgust. "Talk? Veronica, isn't this exactly the outcome you wanted? If you hadn't tipped Grandma off, how would she have known we were heading to the courthouse today?"
