Chapter 7 How Dare You Drug Me?

Gregory knew Madilynn would never agree to his divorce from Veronica, so he had planned to finalize it before she found out. That way, even if she learned about it later, there would be nothing she could do. He hadn't expected her to find out so early. Veronica had already come to terms with it and kept telling herself not to care. Still, seeing the open disgust and disdain on Gregory's face made her heart ache as if a thousand needles were piercing it. She took a deep breath and looked at Gregory calmly. Her red lips parted as she said slowly, "I didn't tip her off. Whether you believe it or not, Gregory, I want this marriage to end even more than you do." "Is that so?" Gregory looked utterly unconvinced by Veronica's words, his disbelief written plainly across his face. "Are you playing hard to get just to catch my attention? Haven't you used tricks like that often enough in the past?" Veronica's breathing grew heavier. It was true that she had once tried every possible way to get Gregory's attention. "I'll find a chance to explain everything to Mrs. Sutton Senior. Don't worry, I'll make sure you and Camelia get what you want." After saying that coldly, Veronica turned and walked out of the bedroom. The moment she stepped outside, her phone rang. She pulled out her phone, and her breath caught for two seconds when she saw the caller ID labeled "Mom". It only lasted a moment. She quickly steadied her breath, stepped onto the small balcony beside her, closed the door, and then swiped to answer. "Hello?" "I heard from Rowena that you've returned," the woman on the other end said, her tone distant and cold. It hardly sounded like a mother speaking to her daughter. "Yes," Veronica replied. Veronica's mother, Justina Patton, continued, "Since you're back, come home immediately. You never explained what happened three years ago, and you never showed any remorse." "Veronica, don't think that just because three years have passed, this matter is over," Justina said sternly. At the mention of that incident from three years ago, Veronica suddenly smiled. Three years had passed, and it was time to settle everything. "I'll come back tomorrow," Veronica said evenly. "I want you back now, immediately." Justina's tone was sharp and uncompromising. Veronica idly twirled the leaves of the small plant in front of her, her expression completely unchanged. "Sorry, I'm busy right now. Can't make it." "Veronica, I'm giving you 30 minutes. If you dare not come back, don't ever think you can set foot in this house again!" Justina threatened coldly. In the past, Veronica would have obeyed without question. But now, everything was different. "Then I won't set foot in that house," she said indifferently and hung up the phone. As she looked down at the plant, a flash of hurt crossed Veronica's eyes. Three years ago, Rowena, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Everwell Medical Center, had an important surgery scheduled. But on the eve of the operation, she was rushed to the hospital because of a peanut allergy. As a result, the surgery she was supposed to perform the next day had to be reassigned. An investigation later revealed that a housekeeper had sprinkled crushed peanuts into Rowena's salad, triggering her allergic reaction. When the scheme was uncovered, the housekeeper confessed, claiming that Veronica had bribed her to put crushed peanuts in Rowena's salad. As a result, Veronica was condemned and scolded by the entire family. She was even forced to apologize to Rowena. No matter how many times she explained that she would never do such a thing, no one believed her. Thinking about it, Veronica felt a deep emptiness in her heart. So be it. Tomorrow, she would resolve everything once and for all. That afternoon, Veronica stayed at the Sutton residence to keep Madilynn company. She briefly told her about what she had gone through over the past three years. Madilynn knew that Veronica must have suffered greatly during that time. Out of concern, she directly suggested that Veronica and Gregory move back to live at the Sutton residence. Of course, Veronica and Gregory strongly opposed it, but in the end, they couldn't go against Madilynn and were forced to compromise. That evening, Madilynn sent them back to their room, claiming it was time to get some rest. The room had only one bed with a single blanket. Veronica turned to Gregory and said bluntly, "I'm sure you don't want to sleep in the same bed as me, so I guess you'll have to make do with the couch, Mr. Sutton." She then walked over and sat on the bed with complete ease. Although they had been married for years, aside from that one accidental night, they had never shared a bed—or even a room. Gregory glanced at Veronica coolly but said nothing. Of course, he had no intention of sharing the bed with her. As he looked away and took just a couple of steps, an unusual sensation suddenly washed over him, and his expression changed sharply. He felt hot, burning, unbearably thirsty, and completely parched. These symptoms… Gregory's eyes snapped up as realization hit. His gaze turned icy and piercing as it locked onto Veronica, and his voice dripped with deadly chill. "Veronica, how dare you drug me?"
