My heart hammered like a drum in my chest. Maya's screams for help were raw, like a cry from her soul. They pierced my ears and echoed around me. The pain on her face made my stomach clench and twist. Something was happening to her. She remembered something. I didn’t dare speak. I swept her into my arms; she was unconscious, lost in her mind.
