Chapter 23
I walked Ella to her apartment.
"You told her? Not worried everyone’s gonna find out?" I asked, sounding pretty casual about it.
Ella opened the door without missing a beat. "It’s just the truth."
"I’ve got nothing to hide. If someone asks, I’m not gonna lie about it."
"And besides, you already went public," she said, glancing at me with a bit of helplessness in her eyes.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
"Yeah, guess I did," I said cheerfully.
I dropped off her stuff at the doorway and gave her a wave.
"Later," I said, trying to sound cool but kinda reluctant to leave.
After walking out of her tiny apartment, I pulled out my phone once I hit the street.
"Don’t forget to put the pie in the fridge."
"Got it."
Ella texted back almost instantly.
I smiled, soft and warm.

I slid into my car but didn’t drive off right away. I spent a few minutes replying to a bunch of comments, then finally hit the dial button.
