When I turned back to Cindy, I was surprised to see her holding a phone. The flickering screen told me that she was currently on a call.
Bruce was most likely on the other end of the line. And I bet the call had started since the moment I entered, or maybe even earlier. Cindy just hadn't mentioned it.
So, Bruce had heard our conversation. Seeing the smug look on Cindy's face, I suddenly didn't know how to react.
So, what if Bruce had heard us? I had just been doing my job. Even if Bruce yelled at me, I wouldn't be at fault.
As I was about to leave the office, Cindy's soft voice seeped through the door crack and into my ears. "Nance is right. It's my job after all. I shouldn't bother her with it."
She was framing it as if this was the first time she had shoved her responsibilities onto me.
