Chapter 124
Silas looked at Bethany in the oversized hospital gown. Her fragile frame looked even smaller than usual, and it tugged at his heart.
He had finally gotten Jane to make sure Bethany ate three or four proper meals a day, just to help her put on a little weight. Yet it had taken only a few days for all that progress to vanish.
Silas pinched the little bit of flesh on her cheek with a sigh. "Be good, okay? If you lose any more weight, you won't look pretty anymore, Mrs. Brennan."
His casual tone washed away some of the gloom hanging over Bethany. "Silas, that hurts!"
"Good. If it hurts, maybe you'll remember it. Got it?" Silas said.
Bethany pursed her lips in annoyance. She watched him hold a porcelain bowl with the little daisies on it, his fingers brushing against the warm rim as he scooped up a spoonful of porridge.
"The doctor said you need to eat something light. Come on. Open up."
Bethany wasn't used to being waited on like this. She reached out. "I'll do it myself."
