Chapter 15

Melody paused for a moment. Caleb said, "We were just eating downstairs. Dr. Chesson specifically bought you this cake. He said it was your birthday yesterday." Maybe it was because he had said Melody was deaf yesterday, so Caleb still felt a bit awkward. He hesitated. Then, he lowered his voice and said, "Ms. Wardolf, your birthday was yesterday, too? Let me wish you a happy birthday. I still have something to do, so I'll go back to my office. Enjoy the cake." After speaking, he turned and left, as though he was worried Melody might call out to stop him. Tiffany was also at the nurse's station. As soon as Caleb walked away, she immediately came over and said, "Mel, was it your birthday yesterday as well?" Melody nodded. Tiffany said, "Then why didn't you say anything yesterday..." She didn't even finish before she suddenly realized the situation and stopped talking. Yesterday, everyone had been celebrating Krystal's birthday. Nobody noticed Melody at all. Tiffany finally realized why Melody's mood had been so off yesterday. Anyone would be upset if nobody remembered their birthday and they still had to cheerfully celebrate someone else's. Nobody would feel happy in that situation. However, Tiffany looked over at the cake sitting there and blinked. She asked carefully, "Mel, why would Dr. Chesson order you a cake today?" Others not knowing Melody's birthday was understandable. However, Jeremy was Melody's fiancé. Did he forget as well? Yet, he had ordered a cake for Krystal yesterday. Tiffany's inquisitive look was all too obvious. Melody's eyelids quivered. She pressed her lips together, straightened her back, and stayed silent for a moment before slowly speaking. "Yesterday was really busy in our department. I told him not to order the cake then." It was obviously an excuse, but Melody couldn't come up with anything else to say. Fortunately, Tiffany didn't press. Melody wanted to shift Tiffany's focus, so she said, "Since you're here, take the cake and share it with everyone. Have some together." "Sure!" Tiffany smiled as she opened the box. However, she froze when she saw what was inside. Jeremy had ordered Melody a mango cake. Everyone at the nurse's station knew Melody was allergic to mango. Someone brought a mango once, and Melody ate just a small piece. She ended up covered in hives. Melody also saw the mango cake. Her pupils contracted, and her hands slowly clenched at her sides. Her heart suddenly felt empty. She had been allergic to mangoes since she was a child. She had mentioned it many times in front of Jeremy. She couldn't believe he wouldn't remember. Tiffany looked at the cake. She wasn't sure what to do and could only look at Melody hesitantly. Melody couldn't describe how she felt. She didn't even have the energy to make excuses. After a while, she managed to rasp, "Tiffany, go ahead and share it with the head nurse and the others. I need to check the fluids for the patient in Bed 4." It was obviously an excuse to escape, but Melody couldn't care about that right now. She turned and went downstairs. When she was far away from the smell of disinfectant, she felt like she could breathe again. That empty feeling in her chest was impossible to describe. It felt painful and overwhelming. She didn't stay on the lower floor long. After just a few minutes, she returned to the department. She checked the IV fluids for the patient in Bed 4. Once she confirmed it was fine, she left. As soon as she stepped out of the room, she ran into Jeremy and Krystal getting off the elevator. It was already spring. Sunlight came through the large windows in the hallway and fell right on Jeremy. He wasn't wearing a white coat but a simple white shirt. He was tall and lean but not frail. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows, revealing well-defined forearms that hinted at his strength. Melody stopped for a moment, wanting to avoid them, but Jeremy had already noticed her. He lifted his gaze, his dark eyes landing on her. He spoke in a low voice. "Melody." Melody stiffened a little and didn't move. Jeremy's brow furrowed slightly. He took a long stride forward and walked straight to her. Melody caught the clean and cool scent on him. Jeremy looked at her and spoke without much emotion. "Caleb brought the cake up to you." "Yeah." Melody nodded numbly. She didn't show any other reaction. Jeremy hadn't expected her to respond like that and seemed surprised. He looked at Melody for a moment, then switched topics. "There's a surgery at 3:00 pm. Get ready." Melody assisted in all of Jeremy's surgeries because she was the one who could work best with him. Melody nodded. "Got it." Somehow, Jeremy felt a little uncomfortable with Melody's reaction but couldn't pinpoint why. He brushed it off. Melody watched Jeremy as he seemed about to leave. She held her breath for a second, then suddenly said, "Jeremy." He stopped and turned to look at her. Melody felt anxious. She could sense the dryness in her throat, but she still wanted to ask, "Did you pick that cake yourself?" Her eyes were bright and persistent. She waited for his answer.
