Chapter 17

Tiffany answered, "There was an emergency in the ward. Melody was busy there and asked me to come." Jeremy paused for a moment. He lowered his eyes and said nothing. They were still in the preparation stage, and the patient had not arrived yet. Tiffany hesitated for a bit before she spoke again. "Dr. Chesson." Jeremy kept his head down as he got ready. "Yes?" Tiffany and Melody had started at the hospital around the same time and had always been close. She remembered how disappointed Melody seemed at noon. She couldn't help but want to speak up for her. She looked at Jeremy and said, "Dr. Chesson, you remember Melody is allergic to mango, right? I get that you're usually busy and might forget sometimes, but you ordered a mango cake for her birthday." She lowered her voice and continued, "That might not have been a good idea." She felt a bit hesitant as she said it. This was Melody's matter, not hers. Still, she couldn't help speaking up. The mango cake was eventually shared among the nurses. Once they learned it was a birthday cake from Jeremy, no one said anything to Melody directly, but they started whispering behind her back. Tiffany never told Melody what they were saying because she felt bad for her. Jeremy went silent for a moment after hearing Tiffany's words. His dark eyes were deep, and he pressed his thin lips together. He seemed to be thinking. No wonder Melody had asked if he bought the cake himself. He lowered his gaze and said calmly, "I was discussing a case with Dr. Finnigan at lunchtime. Caleb ordered the cake. He didn't know Melody was allergic to mango." Tiffany went silent and didn't know how to reply. Removing a hematoma wasn't a major surgery. It ended quickly. Melody had settled the patient in Bed 4 and finished preparing the medication. Before long, Tiffany returned. Jeremy came back with her. Jeremy had just finished surgery. He looked a bit tired, though the crisp white coat made him seem less so, leaving the impression of cool detachment. He glanced at Melody, but she avoided his eyes. She kept her head down and continued working. Usually, whenever she saw Jeremy approach, she would at least ask if he needed anything. Even so, Jeremy still spoke. "After work, come back with me." Melody froze for a second and didn't react immediately. By then, Jeremy had already walked off. Tiffany, who had just finished in the operating room, could rest for a while. She was checking her phone and suddenly exclaimed, "Oh wow! Do you know who the patient in Bed 5 is?" Another nurse answered right away, "You just came out of surgery. We saw the news already. The patient in Bed 5 is a famous female entrepreneur. "Until now, our head nurse has been taking care of Bed 5, and she kept the secret really well. But apparently, someone spilled the news. I saw that there's a big uproar online, and now all kinds of info about her, including her illness, has been leaked. Her company's stock took a big hit." Tiffany kept chatting with them, but Melody didn't pay attention. The hospital had rules against invading patient privacy. After taking care of everything, she took out her phone. She was going to message Felicia and ask her to grab dinner together. However, she saw a message from Andrew. "Come home tonight." It was just three words. Looking back at her entire chat history with Andrew, Andrew always used the same direct, almost commanding tone. She pressed her lips together. No wonder Jeremy had told her earlier they would leave together that evening. After work, Melody waited at the door of the doctors' offices. Jeremy and Krystal came out together. Jeremy glanced at Melody. His handsome face remained indifferent as he said, "Let's go." He didn't pause and walked ahead side by side with Krystal. Melody hesitated, then followed behind. She saw them chatting and laughing as they discussed the success of a new surgery. She went blank for a moment. She had to admit that the two of them looked very in sync together. They reached the parking lot. Krystal naturally opened the front passenger door and got in. Melody opened the back door and saw a stack of documents and books on the seat, along with a woman's trench coat. Melody had seen Krystal wearing that coat the day before. Krystal turned from the front seat and said coolly, "When you get in, try not to scatter the books or the files. I arranged them in order earlier, and I need to bring them home later." She paused, then added, "And don't get my coat dirty."
