When she got off work, she swapped into a pair of flat shoes-not the prettiest, but easy to drive in and quiet on steps. Louise had barely gone down a few flights when she noticed someone curled up crying in the stairwell.
"What are you crying about?"
The sudden voice startled Lucy, who jerked her head up, her cheeks streaked with tears. Her eyes were all red and watery as she stammered softly, "Miss Bennett..."
She looked exactly like a kid who got into trouble and just got caught by a teacher.
Louise walked over and pulled her up without a word, stuffing a handkerchief into her palm. "You're not a kid anymore. Sitting here bawling? What if someone walks by? You want to be used as a joke around the office?"
Lucy took the handkerchief and lowered her head, wiping her nose and face. "That's why I picked this spot-no one ever comes here."
