Louise Bennett suddenly stood up, her tone icy. "If you don’t trust me, fine. But I’m not who they say I am, and whatever you’re thinking about me and Robert Taylor—it's not true. Don’t bother with breakfast. I’ll eat at the office."
She turned around and walked upstairs without another word.
Dominic Ellis stared at her retreating back, heart aching, but what could he do?
Watching her turn away without a second glance because of another man, not even wanting to eat the breakfast he made—yeah, that hurt. It hit him hard that all his effort might not even come close to one thoughtful gesture from someone else.
Maybe it was because she’d gotten used to him always giving in, always protecting her. Now, the second he wasn’t warm or careful with his words, she’d shut down completely, throw up those emotional walls, and give him that cold shoulder.
He didn’t get it. Why did she care so much about others, but act like his hurt meant nothing?
