Chapter 391
The day Sophia Reese was laid to rest, the sky opened up and heavy rain poured down.
Louise Bennett stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, watching the rain slap down on the banana leaves in the yard. Her mind slowly settled, the pattering sounds matching her shifting emotions.
Truth be told, she and Sophia Reese barely knew each other. They’d only had a few encounters. But for some reason, their lives just wouldn’t stay separate—it was like an invisible thread still tying them together.
Dominic Ellis handed her a mug of warm milk and sat beside her. “What’s going through your mind?” he asked gently.
Louise held the cup but didn’t drink, eyes still fixed outside. “Nothing much. Just thinking how strange life is sometimes. Some people—you think they’ve got nothing to do with you—but somehow, you just can't get away from them."
Dominic kept quiet. He knew she meant Sophia. It was the woman’s burial today, and with the rain, of course his wife had gotten sentimental.
Out at the grave, Jess
