Chapter 38: The Feeling of Being Expected
Albertus deserves the title of master storyteller that Haykin just gave him.
Right now, he's smoothly lying without drafting out a story, explaining to Haykin why he treated her the way he did before. He claims it was because he misunderstood Alicia's loyalty and was manipulated into confining her.

Now that the truth is out, Albertus pledges to make it up to the mother and daughter.
"You should know, even when I didn't like you, I still wanted to hand the company over to you in the future!" Albertus speaks off the cuff, nearly making Haykin burst into laughter.
Haykin now understands.
To Albertus, announcing Thomas as the heir was just a temporary measure.
It was to prevent Thomas, who had always been content, from suddenly rebelling.
The more obedient someone is, the scarier they become when angry, and Albertus understands this principle well.
