(Sarah's POV)
The despair in Grace's voice twisted something deep within me. No matter what anyone said, she was my daughter. She had been my daughter since the moment I held her, since the moment that rogue snatched Scarlett and left us with Grace. Yes, Scarlett may have been my blood, but Grace was the one I chose.
"What did Alexander say exactly?" I asked, clasping Grace's hand tightly. Her trembling fingers were cold, almost icy.
She sniffled, wiping a tear that slipped down her cheek. "He barely said anything," she croaked. "He sounded… distracted. Distant. Like he didn’t even care."
My jaw tightened. This wasn’t just Alexander’s fault. Scarlett had wormed her way back into his mind, into his life. Even after I tried to sever all ties with her—to protect Grace, to save Grace—Scarlett still haunted our every step.
