The next day, the rain was absolutely pouring.
A sleek black SUV rolled to a stop outside Halden & Co.'s building. The driver circled around and opened the back door. Elaria stepped down, holding up a black umbrella, but the rain was coming down so hard that part of her shoulder was soaked in seconds.
By the car, Ms. Woods had been waiting.
She guided Elaria straight to the top-floor office. After pouring her a cup of tea, Ms. Woods said softly, "Mr. Richards is in a meeting, but it should wrap up shortly. Please have a seat."
Then she slipped out quietly.
But Elaria didn't sit.
She stood in front of the massive floor-to-ceiling window, quietly looking out at most of Caelmoor wrapped in heavy rain. The streets shimmered wet, like the city itself was trying to drown out every last impulsive dream of youth.
She stood there for a long time-so long it felt like time had blurred. For a moment, it was like those years hadn't passed, like she was still the VP of Halden.
