In the afternoon, Eric Campbell showed up.
Jason Davies had picked a coffee shop for their meetup, but neither said much at first.
He handed the electronic medical records over. Eric flipped through them, his brows pulling tighter with each page.
Small cell lung cancer—aggressive and already spreading through the bloodstream even at an early stage. Surgery might buy him time, but chemo would still be necessary. And even then… well.
Just watching Eric’s face, Jason knew what he was dealing with.
He glanced out the window. The streets were buzzing—people walking, laughing, living. Even the homeless man digging through the trash looked thrilled just finding an empty bottle.
That burst of joy, that sense of being alive—they were signs of hope.
For once, Jason found himself envious of a homeless man.
He pulled out his wallet, took out the last of his cash—maybe seven or eight grand—and waved down a server.
“Could you give this to the man across the street?” he asked.
