The rain hadn’t stopped.
Even though the villa had top-notch ventilation, Ruby Henderson still felt everything was damp—maybe it was the house, maybe it was her heart, or maybe it was just all the memories weighing down on her.
When she walked back into the master bedroom, Jason Davies was nowhere to be seen. Thinking he might be in the bathroom, she called out softly, "Jason? Jason?"
But the bathroom was empty. So was the walk-in closet. Not a trace of him.
She stood there for a moment under the bright lights, something tugging at her. A thought hit her, and she stepped into the guest room next door. The thick carpet muffled her footsteps, so the man resting against the headboard didn’t even stir.
She walked to the bed, her throat already tight before she could speak.

Her voice was barely above a whisper. He slowly opened his eyes, his gentle, scholarly smile still there. “Ruby? Your eyes are red… is it still raining? Has the sky started to lighten?”
