He really went overboard with the drinking tonight.
The buzz had fully kicked in—his head was spinning, and in the end, it was the driver who had to help him upstairs. The stairwell was dead quiet; everyone in the house was already asleep, kids and elders alike.
The living room was dimly lit.
The driver carefully supported him while watching his step, mumbling, “The Davies family sure turns in early. It’s only ten-thirty and everyone’s knocked out.”
Just as he said that, a woman came into view on the landing. She had a thin coat over her pajamas and was holding a TV remote in her hand, clearly watching TV. Daniel Richards stared straight at her for a beat, then turned to the driver with a low voice, “She’s waiting for me.”
The driver didn’t quite know what to say, so he just nodded at her. “Happy New Year, Miss Henderson.”
Daniel’s tone was calm, “Still a few days to go.”
