Qinshan had a huge avalanche.
Everything at the foot of the mountain—houses, chicken coops, all of it—got buried under tons of snow. William Turner watched helplessly as the snow swallowed Chloe Grace and Heather right in front of him.
Of course, the SUV didn’t make it either. It stalled instantly, buried in the thick snow.
For a while, there was only silence.
Then William forced the car door open, staggering out. Without caring about the blizzard still falling around him, he stumbled toward where Chloe had been. He didn’t even hesitate, dropping down and digging through the waist-deep snow with bare hands in front of what looked like the old pigsty. He was terrified—really, gut-wrenchingly scared—that if he was too late, Chloe might already be gone.
The snow wasn’t loose powder either—it was dense and icy, hard to shovel through. Within minutes, William’s fingers were bloody, the red dripping onto the white snow like paint, but he didn’t seem to notice. He just called out Chloe’s name
