Chapter 27
Monica's eyes flickered, and she quickly stepped forward to link her arm with Heidi's. She said, "Mom, I haven't done anything. Maybe you're just hearing things."
Heidi responded, "Monica, I know you well. I know it might be hard to accept having Nicole back, but as you know, the Boyd family can afford to raise another child. Get along with her, and both of you will be equally important."
However, those words didn't seem like reassurance to Monica. They sounded like a warning.
She felt as though Heidi was accusing her of being unreasonable, blaming her for targeting Nicole. The idea of equality sounded nice, but when it came down to it, Heidi always favored Nicole.
Monica could barely mask her frustration. Clenching her teeth, she muttered, "Mom, if you can't accept me, I'll just move out. You and Dad have raised me all these years, and I'm grateful. I'll make my own money and repay you someday."
