Sam raised a brow at Madison, genuinely surprised. He hadn't known about that habit, but he still corrected her. "I'm not lying. I really do have things to handle."
Madison nodded. "Alright. Let's leave it at that then."
Instead of arguing, she changed the topic. "Sam, you've already done a full investigation. I know I'm partly responsible, but most of what happened wasn't my fault. So shouldn't you take back what you said before?"
"What did I say?" His eyes flickered as he feigned ignorance.
Madison saw right through it. She set her drink aside and pushed herself upright on one foot.
Watching her, Sam frowned instantly. "What are you doing?"
He crossed the space in a heartbeat, steadying her bandaged arm.
Her mood brightened in a way she couldn't hide when she saw him rush over like that, instinctively worried about her. He might be distancing himself, but when it came to her safety, he still reacted faster than anyone.
