Kira realised she had been made an unwitting casualty in the men’s childish game.
She kept her head down and her eyes on the food, even though she wasn’t hungry at all.
The two men carried on chatting good-naturedly as if the undercurrent of rivalry had been a figment of her imagination.
‘You’ve been in Stamford for some time,’ Austyn said. ‘How long are you planning to stay here?’
Gideon looked at Kira meaningfully. ‘I’ll leave when I got what I came for.’
Kira heard this.
She understood it.
She said nothing.
Austyn’s voice was colder now. ‘You can never step into the same river twice. Things change. People too. It may not be possible to always get what you want. You need to learn when to let go.’
Gideon locked eyes with him. ‘I don’t believe that. I believe some things will never change, like feelings.’
Austyn curled his lip. ‘That’s a rather naïve view. As your friend, let me offer you a piece of advice, get a grip on reality. Face facts and move on!’
