Forty minutes after leaving Dodie's apartment, Weslee pulled herself from the cab and made her way into the Carter mansion.
Though she wasn't stumbling, the alcohol had dulled the constant tension she carried in her shoulders.
The butler intercepted her immediately, his face pinched with concern.
He motioned for a maid who rushed forward to help Weslee onto the nearest sofa.
"Luna Weslee, how much did you drink?" he asked, the scent of whiskey and wine emanating from her clothes. "Would you like some hangover remedy?"
"No thank you," Weslee said softly. Her body felt heavy, but her mind was surprisingly clear. "Please just help me to my room."
Weslee wasn't just tired from the drinks—it was the kind of deep exhaustion that came from years of carrying too much.
