The moment I saw Sophie standing outside the car, head bowed like a guilty little quail, I felt my temper boil over. This girl… no conscience. Not a single shred. She got herself into trouble, didn’t tell me, and then had the audacity to stand there trembling, as if she were the victim of my wrath.
Suppressing the anger tightening in my chest, I snapped, “Get in.”
She didn’t move. I gritted my teeth, my voice sharper now. “You did something wrong, and you still want me to carry you into the car?”
