The unsettling stillness of the room was palpable as Lillian held the phone close to her ear, her breath caught in the suspension of a moment that felt like it might stretch into eternity. The voice that finally broke through the static was low, almost a whisper, yet it carried a weight that pressed ominously against the walls of his confined space.
"You know who I am, or at least, you should have suspected by now," the voice said, its tone both enigmatic and revealing.
Lillian's grip on the phone tightened, her eyes narrowing as he tried to place the voice, to assign it to a face, a name, anything. But nothing came. The voice was familiar, yet distorted enough to keep its identity just out of reach.
